Cigna is a nationwide insurance provider that offers a variety of coverage plans and access to a network of doctors across the country. With plans that stretch from the Atlantic to the Pacific, Cigna has coverage in every state including Texas. With individual, family, and employer sponsored healthcare plans, there are many options to choose from that will fit your lifestyle.

Cigna also incorporates the prevention and treatment of substance abuse in many of their plans. Beginning in 2016, Cigna launched a “Drug and Alcohol Awareness Series”, which made seminars on substance use and abuse free and accessible to their members across the country. Many Cigna plans offer coverage for both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, as well as support programs for parents and loved ones of individuals suffering from substance abuse.

Alcohol Addiction In Texas

Alcohol remains the most commonly abused drug in Texas today, as it has been for decades. Texas leads the nation in drunk driving deaths, with 1,323 drinking and driving deaths reported in 2016 according to MADD. To put that number into perspective,  38% of all traffic deaths involved alcohol. Unfortunately this means that 38% of all traffic deaths in Texas last year were preventable. Texas also had 64,971 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol last year, and risks such as drinking and driving are often a telltale sign of alcohol abuse.

Underage drinking is also an ongoing issue in Texas. According to a 2016 study done by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, over 52% of high school aged children reported that they have had alcohol at some point in their lives. 11.5% of students reported having participated in binge drinking in the past 30 days according to the same study. Binge drinking is defined by the study as having five or more drinking in one sitting, and is considered another telltale sign of alcohol abuse. Underage drinking is especially dangerous when considering the increased risk an adolescent has of developing an alcohol dependency later on in life.

6.5% of all Texas residents suffer from a history of alcohol dependence. Considering the severity of alcoholism and alcohol dependence, this statistic is significant when looking at a snapshot of drug addiction in the state. Alcohol dependency is so dangerous that the withdrawal symptoms associated with alcoholism have the potential to be lethal. Some of these withdrawal symptoms can include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Night sweats
  • Insomnia
  • Anger, paranoia, anxiety
  • Severe depression
  • Weight loss
  • Mood swings
  • Seizure
  • Coma

Medical detox is sometimes advised for individuals who have suffered from alcohol dependency for an extended period of time. Through this type of detox, clients are able to be supervised by clinical personnel around the clock, and medication is sometimes used to help provide some relief from the discomfort of withdrawal. Once the body has rid its system of alcohol, the process of recovering from addiction can begin.

Prescription Drug Abuse In Texas

Like the rest of the country, Texas has been hit hard by the opioid epidemic that is sweeping the nation. Statistics regarding the number of individuals suffering from opioid abuse is difficult to track accurately due to the evolution of opioid dependence. Often opioid dependence will begin with using prescription opioids to relieve severe or chronic pain from either a major trauma or surgery. While opioids can be a potent pain reliever, they also have extremely addictive qualities that can affect an individual after only a few doses.

Even when taken exactly as directed by a physician, prescription opioid use can still develop into an addiction. When this happens, patients will generally fill all prescription refills possible, and will attempt to get additional scripts as needed. With hospitals across the country tightening control opioid prescriptions through more thorough tracking of each patient’s prescription use, patients will find that fewer refills will be granted for a single trauma or surgery. If a patient is addicted to opioids at this point, they will often turn to the streets to gain access to the drug their brain cannot stop craving.

This is where tracking that actual number of addictions in the state becomes difficult. Most opioids affect the brain in a similar manner, which means they are somewhat interchangeable and can be used in place of one another to get the same effect. Heroin, which is also an opioid, is often a cheap and accessible alternative to prescription opioids. Texas’s direct border with Mexico also makes the imported heroin easy to smuggle into the state.

In 2015 alone, over 2,500 deaths could be attributed to heroin overdose in Texas according to data collected by the CDC. It is estimated that over half of those who suffered a fatal overdose began their addiction through prescription opioids. Reported deaths from prescription opioids can also vary wildly from source to source, making prevention efforts difficult and broad. Texas is not alone in this struggle, as it is a truly nation-wide epidemic.

Cigna Inpatient Rehab Coverage

Inpatient rehabilitation is often considered an essential step in the addiction recovery process. Much of this can be attributed to the commitment required for a client to participate in an inpatient program. Through inpatient rehab, clients will physically reside at a rehab facility, allowing them to focus completely on their recovery.

Residing at a rehab facility also removes a client from the previous temptations and triggers of their addiction. Providing a stable, encouraging, and clean environment can contribute significantly to the success of a rehab program. For this reason, many families will intentionally choose an out of state rehab facility for their loved one to ensure they are far away from their previously destructive environment.

Cigna recommends working with your physician or provider when considering an inpatient rehabilitation program. Cigna’s coverage includes both hospital programs or special clinics dedicated to drug rehabilitation. For residential or inpatient rehabilitation, Cigna’s coverage will generally span 1-6 weeks, taking special consideration for where you are in your recovery to determine coverage past six weeks. Cigna recommends inpatient rehab if:

  • You suffer from other mental illnesses along with your addiction
  • Outpatient rehab alone did not work for your addiction
  • Your addiction is severe, or has been present for an extended period of time
  • You have relapsed from recovery in the past
  • Your environment is detrimental to your recovery, or presents temptations or stressors that will hurt your chances of making a full recovery

Cigna Outpatient Rehab Coverage

Outpatient rehab is generally not intended to be used as an addiction treatment program on its own. Outpatient rehab is most effective when it is preceded by an inpatient or residential rehabilitation program. Group meetings, one on one therapy, counseling sessions, alumni events, and sponsors are generally a part of most outpatient rehab programs. These functions are intended to provide continued support past inpatient rehab.

During your time in inpatient rehab, you will be taught different skills, behavioral therapy, and coping mechanisms to help get you through some of the emotional and mental distress associated with addiction. Outpatient rehab will continue those therapies and help you apply them to your life back at home. This allows you to continue rehabilitation in the comforts of your own home surrounded by the people who love you the most.

Weekly meetings during outpatient rehab can help keep you on track, while sponsors and other alumni act as your support system on your toughest days. It is not uncommon for clients to report that the support network they built during their time in outpatient rehab lasted years past their final meeting. Support networks can help keep you from relapsing down the road.

Cigna shares in the belief that addiction recovery is an ongoing process that takes much longer than a 30 day inpatient program. For this reason, they provide coverage for a wide variety of outpatient rehabilitation options. Many of these options are held by mental health counselors, mental health clinics, hospital clinics, or local health departments.

Outpatient rehabilitation can be broken down into two classifications: standard outpatient treatment and intensive outpatient treatment. Cigna provides coverage for both of these classifications depending on physician recommendation. Cigna recommends outpatient rehabilitation if:

  • You have completed an inpatient rehabilitation program and want to continue treatment at home
  • You cannot afford inpatient rehabilitation
  • You cannot take a leave of absence from work
  • You cannot leave your family to reside in an inpatient facility
